Meet Ian

Ian Daley, Learning & Development

For Ian Daley (pictured above), working at Novo Nordisk has given him the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people living with diabetes and other serious chronic conditions, give back to individuals and groups in his community all while building his career in the healthcare sector through leadership development and continuous learning programs.

Ian joined Novo Nordisk Canada in 2012 as a Training Specialist. Since then he has used his excellent communication, project management and training skills to advance many important learning and development programs across the company.

"One of the first things I noticed when joining Novo Nordisk was the tremendous amount of career development focus. Six years later that hasn't changed - they walk the talk. I've worked for other companies where colleagues are constantly jockeying for the next promotion and it's quite cutthroat. I've had the opposite experience here - the expectations are high, but so is the development focus and support. It’s provided me with the opportunity to leverage my strengths and carve out a meaningful career."

Brian Hilberdink, President of Novo Nordisk Canada, says it’s the passion and energy employees bring to drive change for patients that give a special quality to the culture at Novo Nordisk: “We are very ambitious and competitive, but we’re also extremely compassionate. We work hard, but we also have a lot of fun. We approach our work with patients at the centre of every decision. That drives employees to bring their best efforts to work and to really celebrate our achievements.”

As an example, Ian participates in the annual JDRF Revolution Ride to Defeat Diabetes, a stationary bike ride event where each year more than 100 Novo Nordisk employees across Canada participate. The company has raised more than $600,000 for diabetes research since committing to the program in 2004.

“There's a competitive push among our teams to see who can raise the most money,” Ian says. “When they bring kids with type 1 diabetes up on the stage and talk with them about how the disease affects their lives, you see who you're helping, who you’re working hard for. That’s the spirit that pulls our employees together every day at Novo Nordisk.”

“We have a unique approach to the work we do and we’re really proud to receive recognition for that. At the same time, we’re very humble. We know there is a lot of hard work ahead, and we’re definitely up for the challenge!” says Brian Hilberdink.
